Instructions
- 1 Toast walnuts in a skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently until lightly browned and fragrant, 5 to 7 minutes. Crush into fine pieces using a mortar and pestle or a food processor.
- 2 Heat oil in the same skillet over medium heat. Add onion; cook and stir until lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper.
- 3 Mash beans in a large bowl using a fork; stir in walnuts, onion, rice, barbecue sauce, cornflake crumbs, brown sugar, chili powder, paprika, and cumin. Season with salt and black pepper; stir until mixture is well combined and holds together. Shape into 10 patties.
- 4 Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat and lightly oil the grate. Place a sheet of aluminum foil on the grate.
- 5 Place patties on the foil; cook on the preheated grill until browned, 5 to 8 minutes per side.
